John is an experienced innovator, entrepreneur, and investor whose passion is understanding how technology can help people to improve their work and personal lives by balancing their practical, emotional, and aesthetic needs.
As Co-founder and Chief Design Officer of AgVoice, John leads customer discovery, design, and development in a startup which provides an innovative mobile-to-cloud, voice-to-data interaction system for field professionals in agriculture.
As a member of RTP Capital Associates he performs due diligence on and invests in promising early-stage startups in the southeastern US.
Previously as the Director of Design and User Experience at global computer-maker Lenovo’s US headquarters, John led design for desktop computers, workstations, servers, peripherals, and accessories under the Think brands in collaboration with legendary designer Richard Sapper and teams of designers in China, Japan, and the US, helping to fuel the rise from fourth to number one in worldwide market share.
His work has appeared in numerous museums including New York’s Museum of Modern Art; the Chicago Athenaeum; and Red Dot, Die Neue Sammlung, and Vitra museums in Germany. He has earned over sixty national and international awards for design and innovation and holds fifty patents. John is a frequent speaker and critic on design, product development, and global innovation at conferences and universities in the US and Asia.
John holds appointments of Professor of the Practice at North Carolina State University’s College of Design and the Kenan-Flagler Business School at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.
John earned a bachelor’s degree in Engineering and Applied Sciences at Harvard, a master’s degree in Industrial Design from Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and has studied at MIT and Domus Academy in Milan Italy.
